We are happy to advise our customers, drawing on our many years of know-how in the development and manufacture of embedded PC systems, panel PCs and industrial PCs. After agreeing on the system requirements in an initial step, we then develop an industrial computer tailored precisely to the application with all of the required specifications and registrations. A defined process ensures a rapid and seamless implementation, from the concept right to the serial manufacturing.

The customer participates in all phases of the development and manufacture. This transparency creates trust and ensures a mutually good result, without having specified all system properties down to the last detail. A specification is defined, the correct system components are selected and the intended system design is defined, all in close cooperation with the customer. In the context, DSM is able to draw on a wide range of CPU boards. Depending on the application, exclusively industrial PC components with guaranteed long-term availability are utilized. CPU modules in various formats such as PICMG 1.0 / 1.3, Mini ITX, 3.5 inch as well as server platforms or COM Express modules with baseboard are utilized thereby in accordance with requirements.

Sophisticated 3D CAD programs, experienced constructors and an extensive library of components with many PC boards and system components available now enable DSM to show the customer a 3D design study which already contains a precise presentation of the subsequent product in a matter of just a few days.
The optimal solution requires a lot of experience and interdisciplinary knowledge of current hardware, operation system software, mechanics, heat management, EMC behavior and production engineering.

A pre-test to ensure coverage of the required ambient temperature is often also performed in parallel to the 3D construction. In the case of very complex projects that come close to the limits of the technology, DSM has recently also begun using thermo-simulation software. Once there is a contruction draft, the simulation can start to be used.
Using this procedure, it is possible not only to forecast subsequent temperature behavior with astounding precision, but also ventilation and passive cooling can also be optimized – long before the first prototype is on the table. This is particularly important with modern embedded systems, because despite energy-saving CPUs such as for example the Intel® Atom™ platform, very high demands are placed on cooling due to designs that are frequently fanless and extremely compact construction.
The results of the simulation performed at DSM or the pre-test using a thermal imaging camera flow directly into the 3D construction.

Once the first prototypes are constructed and the functions tested, the temperature behavior is measured in our company climatic cabinet with the assistance of heat sensors and the threshold temperatures are tested in accordance with the defined IEC norms. Further, corresponding EMC pre-tests are also run and electrical safety is checked. The pilot series devices are then subjected to validation, where the complete specification is checked again.

The series is produced directly at DSM in Munich. Short routes between sales, development, procurement/logistics and production are crucial for a rapid and well-aligned production process. The three-stage DSM quality assurance system ensures customer satisfaction across the entire production duration. It is precisely with regard to customer-specific industrial PC systems that Germany remains the location of choice for development and production. DSM is therefore in a position to respond to the most varying requirements in a rapid and flexible way.
