DSM’s industry computer steers autonomous vehicle through off-road course The tough RAVON vehicle (Robust Autonomous Vehicle for Off-road Navigation) has successfully steered both off-road courses of the first European Land Robot Trial 2006 (ELROB). This fully autonomous vehicle was developed by the Robot Systems Working Group of Kaiserslautern Technical University, Germany with both technical and financial assistance from well-known companies. The core of the intelligent robot is formed by the 96M1588 19-inch industry computer and the 96M4220o slot CPU card from DSM. The industry computers, suited to tough environments, control the vehicle, for example direction, speed and route planning. In addition, they undertake evaluation of the numerous sensor systems built into the automobile and both stereo cameras. A WLAN card means that the RAVON functions can additionally be controlled by radio. The 96M1588 system, based on the Intel® Pentium® III processor has 14 ISA or PCI/ISA interfaces, which are conveniently accessible from the front side and therefore highly suitable to be built into a vehicle. A CAN bus and FireWire can among other things be connected via PCI. A temperature-regulated fan ensures secure operation all around the year. The 96M4220o slot CPU card is equipped with a high-performance Intel® Pentium® M processor with a clock frequency of up to 2.26 GHz. As the autonomous vehicles are of course able to negotiate various terrains and obstacles, they are particularly suited to widely varying tasks. Fires, hurricanes, aeroplane crashes and attacks on chemical plants or nuclear power stations are just a handful of potential scenarios. The mobile robots are able to protect industrial plants, perform routine measurements in pre-defined areas, undertake reconnaissance tasks in life-threatening environments or assist in clearing work after severe accidents or natural disasters.
