DSM Computer: Quality and service at any price Quality management and training scheme secure "quality and service - made by DSM" DSM Computer AG, a leading provider of industry hardware, emphasizes "quality and service - made by DSM" as a decisive competitive factor in the tough environment of the industrial market. DSM is committed to securing quality standards under its own "Q - DSM Quality" branding and has a quality system approved by the Technical Inspection Agency in accordance with ISO 9001:200 for "development, manufacture and sales" of digital embedded computer technology. The related service orientation of its employees is also of primary importance at DSM: in this way DSM invests not only in product development and quality assurance in a consistent way, but also, against the current trend on the employment market, in the qualified education of its next generation in an ongoing way: nine trainees are able to enter working life at DSM in the coming September as IT system electronic technicians, IT system dealers, electronic engineers for devices and systems, IT dealers, clerks and technical warehousing specialists. Ten further apprenticeships are to be filled for the 2006 training intake. After successful completion, DSM offers its trainees the option of being taken on. The training program has already proven itself over some years as a commercial criterion for success in relation to service mentality: customer service is top of the list of employees' priorities. "We wrote ´quality and service as our company philosophy´ large and do not mean it as a strategic lip service, but rather put great emphasis on the fact that each and every employee internalizes this thought and practice it in their daily interaction with products and customers," emphasized Bernd Gallenberger, board member of DSM. "It is not only for this reason that we are among today's leading providers in Europe's industrial hardware field." For strict quality assurance, DSM realizes extensive quality and control programs. In addition to the consistent implementation of ISO 9001:2000, these also consist of a range of quality assurance measures resulting from daily practice. For the reliability of the most complex electronic systems is only ensured if all modules function in an error-free way. All components undergo strict intake controls and tests prior to system assembly. Extensive 24, 48, and 72-hour tests (depending on customer requirements) check finished DSM products once more in detail for functionality and reliability under extreme climatic conditions before leaving the production plant. DSM regards its extensive training program as a fundamental contribution to the retention and expansion of its service philosophy. "To us, training is a vital part of our company culture," explains Suna Richter. "We do not see training as a burden, but rather as an important contribution to our high level of service and quality. As a trainee, there are already important lessons in team spirit and understanding of the significance of customer service." The guiding idea of DSM training is that every trainee sees themselves as a fixed and important part of the company. Each apprentice has his/her own workstation and integration into current projects, such as for example Internet ranking and network server configuration. Internal and external training sessions are also part of the program: specific problems are discussed and weak points overcome in individual sessions and in groups. Trainees participate in incentives and sporting events such as golf, volleyball and football matches in order to promote team spirit. "Satisfied employees are the basis for success of a company. So we are even more pleased that we have received a lot of positive feedback on our training from vocational schools and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry," summarizes Bernd Gallenberger.
