"B7" BookSize PC from DSM – the logistics professional

The modern logistics is becoming increasingly complex. The goods journey from the production location to the use location often covers thousands of kilometers by air, sea, rail or road. Consequently, carriers require reliable information so they can control their work processes efficiently and economically. The data exchange between manufacturer, distribution center and retailer must also proceed smoothly. The "BookSize B7" embedded PC makes this logistical precision work possible and so allows goods shipments to proceed almost independently along the process chain to the customer.

The embedded system is based on the AMD® Sempron™ Mobile 2100+ processor in conjunction with the AMD, M690E and SB600 chipset or the AMD® Turion 64 X2. To allow flexible expansion, the BookSize system optionally offers a PCI expansion slot for accepting short cards. The computer has space for either a 2.5" (SATA II 300) or a 3.5" EIDE hard disk. For better temperature control, a 6-cm fan is installed in the housing.

The "B7" (96M1461) possesses an integrated ATI Radeon X1250 graphic chip with 256 MB shared memory with VGA and DVI connection. In addition, a Realtek ALC262 HD audio controller and two Gigabit LAN connections are available. Even large retailers are connected with the embedded PC using their materials management system. This provides a complete documentation throughout the entire delivery chain. The transparency of the individual delivery processes allows the work processes to proceed more efficiently and, in particular, at lower cost. In the end, consumers also notice this when they purchase the goods.

Six USB ports are provided for connecting external devices; as an option, a disk-on-module or Compact Flash type I can be installed in the BookSize unit. The power can be supplied using an internal 60 watt power pack, 100-240 V AC, or directly from the 50 watt 24 V DC.

Its compact dimensions (300 x 220 x 90 mm) makes the BookSize system ideal for installation in transport vehicles, for the monitoring of goods containers at airports and in the freight container area at sea. Starting at the moment of the goods handover by the manufacturer and ending at the destination location, the carrier can use the embedded PCs to locate the containers or the appropriate loose pallet freight and, if necessary, change the delivery dates. The data is transferred by GPS, wireless or via W-LAN to the carrier company's main office. In particular, for perishable foods, such as fish and meat, the European law prescribes that the cooling chain may not be interrupted. Special monitoring labels, however, allow the temperature to be checked exactly during the transport. If the cooling enters a critical range, the transponder uses the embedded system to transfer this information immediately to the freight office. The carrier receives a message and, if necessary, can intervene before larger delivery damage results.

As an option, the embedded computer can be supplied with universal metal rails for the space-saving installation on the floor or walls. The CE-certified system operates in the temperature range of 0° to +45° C. The BookSize "B7" model series is available in all RAL and NCS colors, also with customer-specific logo.
