DSM Infinity® 4U industrial system with Intel® Q45 industrial mainboard

The system board represents the heart of every industrial system. Only with its industrial capability can the industrial computer satisfy the various fields of application and their system requirements.

In particular for 19" industrial systems, slot CPU cards are still very common, because their use often dictates applications with several additional expansion cards and housing types with only very small construction height or dimensions and a special backplane. However, one finds ever more applications in which industrial mainboards can be used. The term industrial mainboard in turn distances itself significantly from the usual computers with a motherboard that we meet in the consumer market. The advantages of such solutions are very obvious. Compared with the traditional industrial computers with a slot CPU card, 19" industrial systems with an industrial mainboard have a significantly lower cost, but without any disadvantages with regard to reliability and robustness.

Consequently, the application areas in which 19" industrial mainboard systems with specially designed industrial mainboards can be found are very different and range from the complex robot control in the automotive industry or a filling plant for bottles in automation, for banking systems, in the medical technology for LASIK eye surgery through to digital X-rays in veterinary medicine. Each of these applications requires special features, low maintenance and high reliability, long-term availability, 24/7 continuous operation, extended temperature range, shocks and vibration, and correct operation, even for interference-sensitive apparatus as found in medicine and metrology.

To implement these projects and their solutions, the choice of the system board is very decisive, because only the appropriate industrial board designed to cater for the various influencing factors, such as temperature, vibration, dust, shock and humidity, can ensure a subsequent faultless system function.

DSM Computer AG uses the new industrial mainboard in the ATX form factor manufactured by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. This mainboard contains 20% fewer components with the significant reduction in the number of solder points on the board. This ensures a higher production quality and the resulting industrial capability. The mainboards contain high-quality electrolytic capacitors, so-called long-life types with a particularly high service life, specified for at least 105° C and thus dimensioned for the continuous operation of the mainboard at ambient temperatures as high as +60° C.

The increasing use of digital and wireless transmission technologies in the industrial environment and the observance of the EMC requirements specified by EN-61000-6-2 has caused the interference immunity for industrial devices to be changed correspondingly. Not only the housing and the power supply, but the industrial mainboard plays an important role in the complete system. At the Fujitsu Siemens Computers test center, the mainboard is intensively tested for the industrial interference signal injections. Not only the interference immunity, but also the mechanical loading of the industrial mainboards often under harsh operational conditions is very high. The industrial mainboard with the Intel® Q45 / ICH10 DO is tested in accordance with DIN EN 60068-2-27 (shock) and DIN EN 60068-2-54 (vibration) for industrial capability. This ensures that the incorporated components retain their stable mechanical seating, even in extreme industrial daily operation.

As a German manufacturer for industrial controllers, it is very important for DSM Computer AG to be able to use an industrial mainboard also produced in Germany. The stringent quality assurance of both companies with regard to their products guarantees customers a consistent system quality and reliability of long-term component availability.

The industrial ATX mainboard with the Intel® Q45/ICH10 DO chipset produced by Fujitsu Siemens Computers supports an 800, 1066 and 1333 MHz front side bus and can optionally be expanded to 16 GB main memory. To cater for customer-specific applications, the processor palette ranges optionally from Intel® Celeron® through to the Intel® Core™ 2 Quad processor. The industrial mainboard offers not only three PCI Express slots, one of which supports PCI Express x 16, but also four PCI slots for additional cards.

The board can be operated in the extended temperature range (0° – 60° C) and in continuous operation (24/7). The integrated Intel® GMA4500 graphic controller has 256 MB memory. As an option, a PCI Express x16 graphic card or an ADD+ card can be installed. Up to six SATA II 300 hard disks can be connected as a RAID array. The Dual GB Ethernet LAN, the 5.1 Multichannel Audio and the eight USB 2.0 (two internal, six external) connections makes the industrial mainboard ideal for use in the industrial environment. Unusual, but useful, however, is the internal USB plug connector for a USB stick, which, for example, can be used for a USB dongle.

A system hardware monitor controls both the fan and temperature values of the system. The DSM 4-U Infinity® System (96M1594) offers an industrial ATX mainboard with the Intel® Q45/ICH10 DO chipset and 304.8 x 243.8 mm dimensions.
